OL080: Plant Choices: Nativar, Exotic, Invasive. Working toward Environmentally
Let’s play a game. Where in the world do the plants you choose for gardens come from?
One garden, two gardens, three gardens full of exotic species… What are the impacts of our plant choices? One impact - horticulture is a primary source for the introduction of invasive plant species. How do we avoid these costly mistakes? Quite simply, we can encourage the use of more site-appropriate native species to create gardens with a unique Ontario flare, a unique “Sense of Place.”
There are growing opportunities for the eco-conscious landscaper to become a leader, advocate and innovator and to capitalize on the growing interest in gardens that support healthy ecosystems.
Let’s get inspired and explore how we can meet the challenge of developing beautiful, environmentally sustainable, spaces that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
