Canada Blooms is pleased to welcome our new Head of Horticulture, Derrick Hawley. There is a tall task laying in front of you when your business card says the gardens at Canada's largest celebration of gardening and landscaping are under your purview.
But Derrick Hawley is up to the challenge after being named the Horticultural Director for Canada Blooms. A professional agrologist with extensive experience tending the immaculate fairways and greens in the golf sector, Derrick was most recently a turf management and arboriculture instructor at both Durham College and Humber College. Choosing a paver that reflects your style and application are both important. For example, light-coloured pavers are popular for pool deck applications because they are cooler to walk on. If you're looking at pavers for applications such as driveways and outdoor kitchens, you'll want to choose a paver resistant to dirt, grease and oils.
Take into account all of the key elements in your existing landscape, the architecture of your home and exterior colours. It's Important to make sure all these elements flow nicely and your pavers don't compete with the natural beauty of your existing outdoor space.
Make your project more unique by adding a border to accent. Select the main paver and then complement with one or two accents.

Fall is the best time to start a new lawn from seed or to lay sod. It is the best time to over seed established lawns to fill in bare patches and thicken your grass. In most parts of Canada, the best 'grass seed sowing' occurs from mid-August through late September. The evening temperatures are lower and the morning dew is heavier. As night time temperatures moderate, they are optimum for seed germination.
Preparation is the key to success.Rake the area lightly to remove debris. Add a 1 cm to 2 cm layer of Mark's Choice lawn soil to level out low patches in the lawn and choose the best quality seed for the best result. The grass seed you use is the future pedigree of your lawn. Rake the seed to smooth it and integrate it into the layer of triple mix. Step on the area with flat soled shoes to get the seed and soil in to encourage rapid root growth. This will help new grass get established more quickly. Water the seeded areas and keep the soil damp unilt the grass is at least 3 cm high. (continue reading) |
